Home Remedy for Menstrual Cramps

A Good home remedy for menstrual cramps focuses upon understanding why menstrual cramps occur and how to ease them.

A woman of child bearing age can expect to have a menstrual cycle about 375-450 times in her life time. Unfortunately for some women, each menstrual cycle can mean painful cramps that cause some to take to their beds.

Quite a few women (and some sympathetic men) have asked me why menstrual cramps occur.

The answer is simple: the uterus is contracting (like a birthing pain) to expel the lining of the uterus and the unfertilized egg. These contractions can range from mild to debilitating.

The uterus (or womb) is a smooth muscle with the capacity to stretch and enlarge enough to carry a baby to full term. Like a muscles in the body, it is sensitive to stress, especially during hormone surges. Most women report that their cramps are much worse when they are under stress and high pressure.

So aside from the good ole hot water bottle on the tummy, what is a good home remedy for menstrual cramps?

I am glad you asked that question! Here are my top five best home remedies for menstrual cramps:

  1. Start drinking two cups of chamomile tea twice daily one week before you are to begin your period. If you dont like tea, then take one Natures Way Valerian herb capsule
(natural, non-addictive tranquilizer) twice daily one week before your period to get a running start on managing stress. Start with one capsule if you are a small person. One may do the trick nicely. (Valium is the chemical copy of Valerian. Valerian is a natural herb that cannot be patented. Valium is highly addictive, Valerian is not. You cannot safely copy nature without experiencing serious side effects.)
  2. Keep a bottle of Natures Way white willow bark extract
, which is natural aspirin, in your cupboard to relieve sudden cramps. Take two caps three times daily if cramps are bad. This natural aspirin is not like Bayer; it causes no internal bleeding of your GI tract. Bayer is the chemical copy of white willow bark, which cannot be patented. (Remember to never give children any form of aspirin unless directed by a physician.)
  3. Keep a bottle of Hylands homeopathic Menstral Cramp pellets
. 4 tiny pellets dissolved under the tongue every four hours to relax the uterine muscle. Put in a clean mouth and avoid mint products when using homeopathic medicines.
  4. Keep a container of Natures Herb Boswellin cream, which has natural aspirin cream and muscle pain relieving ingredients. Apply after a hot bath and then go to bed. Or take a hot washcloth and dot it with peppermint oil and lay the warm cloth on your lower abdomen to stimulate the blood flow in the region and ease the flow.
  5. Remember to take a comprehensive multivitamin like Natrol My Favorite Multi without Iron capsules
. They make an iron formulation, but I generally do not recommend iron unless a doctor directs a patient to take iron. I never assume that a person needs extra iron, especially a form of iron that is easily absorbed, like the one in this multivitamin. It is important to correct magnesium and calcium deficiencies, which are sometimes the root cause of severe menstrual cramps.
