SARS

(acute respiratory viral infection) group of viral diseases that are similar between themselves and are characterized by lesions of the respiratory tract (bronchi, larynx, nasopharynx).

Reasons

The disease is transmitted by airborne droplets and is one of the most common among the people. It should be noted that SARS and the flu are closely linked. Influenza is a major causative agent of the disease. The risk of Contracting acute respiratory viral infection is highest in autumn and winter.

Symptoms

SARS symptoms are as follows

  • soreness in the throat, sore
  • dry cough or cough with phlegm
  • nasal congestion and runny nose
  • the increase in temperature and, as a consequence, joint pain and body aches
  • headaches.

There are times when in this disease the patient remained asymptomatic, and the person is not engaged in treatment, which leads to the distribution of infection.

Because the viruses causing the disease are different, there are the following forms SARS

  • rhinovirus infection is characterized by General malaise, without complications. Transferred easily and does not require special treatment
  • coronavirus infection similar to the common cold, but lasts less (approximately 6 days)
  • adenoviral infection is characterized by unpleasant sensations in the eyes (like conjunctivitis) such as pain, burning, watery eyes
  • parainfluenza infection is often manifested through dry, painful coughing.

This condition is primarily dangerous because you can catch him anywhere, any time of the year and in any weather conditions. Of course, the source of the virus is a sick man, but do not forget that the media can be items such as utensils or toys, so SARS in children occurs less frequently than in adults, and occurs with the same symptoms.

The virus also can infect the body through any surfaces (handrails in public transport, door handles) or breath (if there’s sneezed and coughed a sick person). Mostly this disease affects people with weakened immune systems, children and the elderly.

Diagnosis

As mentioned earlier, symptoms of diseases leading to acute viral respiratory infection, very similar, but there are a number of signs that help to identify the causative agent

  • the flu, for example, there are strong pain in the eyes and eyebrows
  • when parainfluenza is present dry painful cough
  • during rotavirus infection most often observed nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • for adenoviral infection, typical symptoms of conjunctivitis.

If the diagnosis is in doubt, there shall be a blood test for antibodies.

Treatment

SARS treatment as follows, depending on the symptoms

  • at high temperatures prescribed antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drugs, excessive drinking
  • at a cold prescribed vasoconstrictor drops and sprays
  • vitamin C supplementation for the General strengthening of the organism
  • strict compliance with bed rest.

Antibiotics in this disease is prescribed only in cases where there are complications triggered by a bacterial infection.

Treatment of SARS in children is carried out in the same pattern as the treatment of SARS in adults. After SARS, some time can be observed General weakness of the body. The main thing is to follow the doctor’s recommendations and do not carry disease on their feet, otherwise you may experience the following complications

  • bacterial rhinitis (inflammation of nasal mucosa)
  • pneumonia
  • inflammation in the ear (otitis media)
  • meningitis (inflammation in the lining of the brain)
  • sinusitis (inflammation of paranasal sinuses)
  • neuritis (an inflammatory disease of the peripheral nerves).
  • radikulonevrit (lesion of spinal nerves and their roots, which is characterized by pain, numbness of various localization and muscle weakness).

Prevention

As you know, any disease is better to prevent than to spend forces and means for the treatment, so it is necessary to take preventive measures

  • to limit contact with the ill person, especially in the early days, when the virus particularly strong
  • during an outbreak, try to avoid contact with a large number of people, public transport, visit public places. If unavoidable, it is recommended to use a protective bandage and change it at least every 2 hours
  • strictly observe the rules of personal hygiene (to wash hands thoroughly and use your own dishes and towel)
  • in summer be careful when using air conditioning. Remember that temperature changes should not exceed 10 degrees
  • to strengthen the immune system. For this it is necessary to take vitamins, eat right (for example, onions and garlic have anti-viral properties), exercise, and train your body to fresh air and monitor sleep mode
  • avoiding harmful habits such as Smoking and alcohol consumption will also help to improve the body’s immunity and reduce the risk of disease.

SARS should be avoided during pregnancy, because in this case the disease may be heavier and cause complications, and drug treatment may be contraindicated.

It must be remembered that this disease is caused by a large number of various pathogens.

There are five main groups which, in turn, are divided into more than three subgroups. These include influenza, adenoviruses, parainfluenza viruses, rhinoviruses, and others, so I want to focus on the fact that acute respiratory viral infections belong to the category of infectious diseases. And, despite the relatively simple course of, this kind of diseases is fraught with complications. So do not be complacent about their health and neglect the advice of experts.
